Frenuloplasty is a minor surgical procedure that corrects issues caused by a restrictive band of tissue, known as a frenulum. This procedure aims to improve mobility and alleviate discomfort when a natural tissue fold limits normal function.
Defining Frenuloplasty
A frenulum is a small fold of tissue that restricts the motion of a mobile organ. These tissue bands are found in various parts of the human body, including the mouth and genitals. Frenuloplasty is the surgical alteration of a frenulum when it limits motion between interconnected tissues. The procedure lengthens or releases a tight frenulum, improving mobility and alleviating discomfort. This surgical technique specifically targets the restrictive tissue without affecting surrounding structures.
Common Reasons for the Procedure
A tight or restrictive frenulum can cause issues. In the mouth, a short lingual frenulum, known as “tongue-tie,” can restrict tongue movement, leading to speech difficulties or feeding problems in infants. A tight labial frenulum, connecting the lip to the gums, might interfere with oral hygiene or orthodontic treatment.
In males, a short or tight penile frenulum (frenulum breve) can cause pain during erections and sexual activity. It can also lead to difficulty retracting the foreskin, bleeding, or tearing. Frenuloplasty addresses these issues by releasing tension, improving foreskin retraction, and reducing pain. It offers a less invasive alternative to circumcision for some individuals, preserving the foreskin while resolving the specific problem.
The Surgical Experience
Frenuloplasty is typically a minimally invasive outpatient procedure. It is often performed under local anesthesia, though general anesthesia may be used depending on the patient’s age or the frenulum’s location. The surgical time usually ranges from 10 to 30 minutes.
During the procedure, the surgeon makes a small incision to release the tight frenulum. The tissue is then either divided and re-sutured to lengthen it, or a small portion may be removed. Dissolvable stitches are commonly used to close the wound, disappearing over several weeks.
Recovery and Important Considerations
Recovery from frenuloplasty typically occurs at home, with most individuals able to resume normal activities within a day or two. Mild discomfort, swelling, and bruising are common in the first few days. Pain can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.
Aftercare instructions often include keeping the surgical site clean and dry, which may involve gently retracting the foreskin for cleaning in penile frenuloplasty. Strenuous activity, including sexual activity, should be avoided for several weeks, typically 3 to 6 weeks, to allow for healing and prevent complications. Signs of infection such as fever, increased redness, throbbing, or discharge warrant contacting a healthcare provider. Follow-up appointments may be scheduled to monitor healing and assess the procedure’s success.
