What Is a Dewberry and How Is It Different From a Blackberry?

A dewberry is a low-growing, trailing perennial shrub belonging to the Rubus genus, which includes raspberries and blackberries. Though they share a genus, dewberries are botanically distinct from the upright-growing blackberries. The name “dewberry” is thought to derive from the fact that the fruit is often found covered in dew or that the long, trailing stems lie low to the ground.

Botanical Identity and Key Distinctions

The defining difference between a dewberry and a blackberry is the plant’s growth habit. Blackberries typically feature erect or high-arching canes that form dense, upright thickets, often reaching heights of three to six feet. In contrast, dewberry plants are characterized by slender, vine-like canes that trail along the ground, rarely rising more than two feet high. This prostrate growth pattern allows the canes to root at the tips when they contact the soil, enabling the plant to spread horizontally and form low-lying mats.

Dewberry stems often have fine, bristly hairs and slender thorns, whereas the upright canes of many blackberry varieties bear hard, tough, and broad-based prickles. Dewberries also complete their growth cycle earlier in the season than most blackberries. Their flowers emerge and their fruit ripens about one to two months before the typical blackberry harvest.

The aggregate fruit of the dewberry, made up of many tiny drupelets, is similar to a blackberry in color, ripening from green to red, and finally to a deep purple or black. However, dewberries often have larger and tougher seeds inside their drupelets compared to blackberries. The fruit is typically ready for harvest earlier in the summer, sometimes as early as May.

Habitat and Geographic Range

Dewberries are native to temperate regions across the Northern Hemisphere, with species found throughout North America, Europe, and parts of Asia. The plants thrive in open, sun-exposed environments, preferring full sunlight to maximize fruit production. They are often found in disturbed habitats, which include open fields, along roadsides, and at the edges of woodlands and thickets.

They are highly adaptable to various soil types, ranging from acidic to neutral, and can grow successfully in both mesic (moist) and dry conditions. Notable North American varieties include the Northern dewberry (Rubus flagellaris) and the Southern dewberry (Rubus trivialis), both of which are common across the eastern and southern United States.

Culinary Uses and Nutritional Profile

The small, dark fruit of the dewberry is prized for its intense flavor, which is often described as a sweet-tart balance. When fully ripe, the flavor tends toward a sweet, tangy profile, though some species, like the European dewberry (Rubus caesius), retain a distinct tartness even after ripening. The berries are softer and more delicate than many cultivated blackberries, making them difficult to transport commercially but ideal for immediate consumption.

Dewberries are consumed fresh, but their natural pectin content also makes them excellent for cooking and preservation. They are a popular ingredient for jams, jellies, pies, cobblers, and syrups. Dewberries are a good source of dietary fiber, which aids in digestive health.
