The second path is through work experience alone. What the Certification Exam Covers

The CMA requires graduation from an accredited medical assistant program, while the CCMA offers the alternative path of qualifying through work experience alone. This makes the CCMA more accessible for people already working in healthcare who didn’t attend a formal program.

The CCMA leans more heavily toward clinical skills and direct patient care, while the CMA covers a broader mix of clinical and administrative competencies. Employer preference between the two varies by region. Some healthcare systems specifically request one certification over the other in job postings, so it’s worth checking what’s most commonly listed in your local area before deciding which exam to pursue.

CCMA certification isn’t permanent. You need to renew it every two years by completing 10 continuing education credits and paying a recertification fee.
