How Cast Fossils Form

The buried organism then decays or dissolves, leaving an empty cavity that perfectly mirrors its shape. This cavity is known as a mold.

Water rich in dissolved minerals, often calcite or silica, then seeps into this empty mold. These minerals gradually accumulate and crystallize within the cavity. As the minerals harden, they form a solid replica of the original organism. This solid replica is the cast fossil, which retains the precise external shape of the creature that once occupied the space. In some instances, the original shell or bone may completely dissolve, leaving only the cast as evidence, while other times both the mold and the cast can be preserved together.

Common Examples of Cast Fossils

Cast fossils commonly preserve the forms of organisms with durable exteriors or hollow structures. Shells of ancient marine creatures like mollusks, including ammonites and trilobites, are frequently found as cast fossils. Their rigid structures allow sediment to form around them effectively, creating clear molds.

Beyond shells, other common examples include fossilized tree trunks, which can form casts of their external bark patterns or internal pith cavities. Trace fossils, such as footprints, burrows, and tracks left by ancient animals, are also often preserved as molds and casts. The three-dimensional integrity of these impressions provides valuable information about the behavior and movement of extinct organisms.
