How a Bone Biopsy is Conducted

The choice of anesthesia depends on the patient’s health, the biopsy site, and the expected complexity of the procedure.

The most common site for a bone biopsy is the posterior iliac crest (back of the hip bone). This area is chosen for its accessibility and sufficient bone marrow. There are two primary methods for obtaining the sample: a needle biopsy or an open biopsy. A needle biopsy involves inserting a hollow needle through the skin into the bone to extract a core sample.

Once collected, the needle is withdrawn or the incision closed with sutures, and a sterile dressing applied.

What Happens After the Biopsy

The biopsy site will be covered with a dressing, which should be kept clean and dry to prevent infection. Patients may experience some localized pain or soreness at the biopsy site, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. Activity restrictions, such as avoiding strenuous exercise or heavy lifting, are recommended for a few days to allow the site to heal.

The collected bone or bone marrow sample is then sent to a pathology laboratory for detailed examination. A pathologist, a doctor specializing in tissue analysis, examines the cells under a microscope. They look for abnormal cells, signs of infection, or other cellular changes characteristic of specific diseases. The results are typically available within a few days to a week, depending on the complexity of the tests required.

Once the results are ready, the referring physician will review them and discuss the findings with the patient. Bleeding at the biopsy site is a possibility, though typically minor and controlled with pressure. Patients are advised to watch for excessive bleeding or the formation of a large bruise.

Infection at the biopsy site is another potential, though infrequent, complication. Healthcare providers take precautions to maintain sterility during the procedure to minimize this risk. Signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, warmth, pus, or fever, should prompt immediate medical attention. Rarely, nerve damage can occur, leading to numbness or weakness in the area.
