The caudal (tail) fin is deeply forked, with the lower lobe often larger than the upper lobe. The upper lobe of the caudal fin and the tip of its elongated lower jaw often display a yellowish or orange coloration. Their distribution spans from Massachusetts in the United States down to Brazil in the Western Atlantic, encompassing the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. They are also found in the Eastern Atlantic, specifically around the Cape Verde Islands and along the coast of Africa from Senegal to Angola.

These fish are primarily inshore, surface-dwelling species, found within a few meters of the sea surface. They frequent coastal areas, often residing over seagrass beds, near coral reefs, and along contour lines where currents are present. Ballyhoo form large schools, a common behavior for forage fish.
