These numbers represent the percentage by weight of the three primary macronutrients: Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K). The first number, 12, signifies 12% nitrogen by weight. The second number, 12, indicates the percentage of phosphorus, expressed as phosphate (\(P_2O_5\) equivalent). The third number, 12, represents the percentage of potassium, expressed as potash (\(K_2O\) equivalent).

The 12-12-12 formulation is considered a “balanced” or “all-purpose” fertilizer because the three nutrients are present in equal proportions. For example, a 50-pound bag contains six pounds each of nitrogen, phosphate, and potash. The remaining weight consists of inert materials or nutrient carriers that aid in application. For application, the fertilizer is commonly available in granular form, which should be spread evenly over the soil surface or lawn using a broadcast spreader.
