Algae spores are always present in pool water, but when the disinfectant level—most commonly chlorine—drops too low, these organisms multiply rapidly, turning the water green, yellow, or even black. Swimming in an algae-infested pool is inadvisable because the environment presents multiple risks, ranging from immediate physical hazards to the potential for serious infections. The presence of visible algae signals a systemic failure of the pool’s maintenance protocols, creating a perfect habitat for other harmful microorganisms.

Health Implications of Exposure

Common green algae itself is not typically harmful to humans, but its presence indicates an environment where disease-causing bacteria and pathogens thrive. Algae consumes the chlorine intended to sanitize the water, allowing microorganisms like E. coli or Pseudomonas aeruginosa to multiply unchecked. These bacteria pose a significant risk of recreational water illnesses through contact or ingestion.

Skin exposure commonly leads to conditions such as folliculitis, a rash of inflamed hair follicles caused by bacteria like Pseudomonas that flourish in contaminated water. The water’s poor quality can also cause general skin irritation, rashes, and dermatitis. The lack of proper sanitation means the water can easily transmit infections to the eyes and ears, frequently resulting in painful conditions like conjunctivitis or “swimmer’s ear”.

If contaminated water is swallowed, a swimmer may experience acute gastrointestinal issues. Symptoms include stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, often caused by ingesting fecal bacteria that low chlorine levels failed to neutralize. Inhaling fine water droplets, known as aerosols, can also lead to respiratory irritation, triggering coughing or asthma-like symptoms. In the worst-case scenario, the rare but highly toxic blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) can produce cyanotoxins that pose severe threats to the liver and nervous system.

Beyond the biological dangers, an algae bloom significantly compromises the physical safety of the swimming environment. Algae growth forms a slick, slimy film on pool surfaces, particularly on steps, ladders, and the pool floor. This layer drastically increases the risk of slipping and falling, which can lead to bruises, cuts, or more severe physical injuries like broken bones.

The most serious physical risk is the reduced visibility caused by the murky, cloudy water characteristic of an algae bloom. Water that is green or dark yellow obstructs the view of the pool bottom, making it nearly impossible to see a submerged person. This lack of clarity dramatically increases the time it takes to spot a swimmer in distress, which is a major factor in drowning incidents.

Damage to Filtration and Pool Structure

The consequences of an algae bloom extend directly to the pool’s infrastructure and the cost of its maintenance. Algae is an organic biomass that quickly overwhelms the mechanical systems designed to keep the water clean. The sheer volume of the dead and living organisms causes the pool’s filter—whether sand, cartridge, or diatomaceous earth—to clog rapidly, significantly reducing its efficiency and water circulation.

This clogging forces the filtration system to work harder, which can lead to premature wear and require expensive backwashing or cartridge replacement. Certain types of algae, such as black algae, can burrow into porous surfaces like plaster and grout, causing staining that is difficult to remove and potentially compromising the structural integrity.
