Bronchoscopy, where a flexible tube with a camera is inserted into the airway, is the most definitive method for directly viewing the injury and assessing its severity. This allows medical professionals to see if the airway is torn, blocked by blood, or if a bronchus has collapsed.

Treatment strategies depend on the injury’s severity. Minor injuries might be managed conservatively with observation, humidified oxygen, and antibiotics. For significant tears or ruptures, immediate surgical repair is often necessary to restore airway integrity.

Surgical procedures, such as tracheoplasty, involve an incision to access the trachea and repair the damaged section, sometimes by removing injured tissue and rejoining healthy ends. In emergencies, endotracheal intubation, placing a breathing tube through the mouth or nose into the trachea, may secure the airway. If intubation is not possible or for long-term airway management, a tracheostomy may be created by surgically opening the neck directly into the windpipe.
