Bristlemouths

Bristlemouths (genus Cyclothone), part of the family Gonostomatidae, are considered the most abundant fish genus on Earth. These tiny fish, usually 1 to 3 inches long, have elongated bodies and small, bristly teeth. Most bristlemouths are dark-colored or translucent for camouflage and possess bioluminescent spots along their undersides, used for communication and confusing predators. Unlike many other twilight zone inhabitants, some bristlemouth species do not undertake extensive daily vertical migrations, remaining at depth.

Hatchetfish

Hatchetfish (family Sternoptychidae) are easily recognizable by their deep, laterally compressed bodies that resemble a hatchet blade. These silvery fish, typically small at up to 4 inches, have rows of light-producing organs along their bellies. They employ bioluminescent counter-illumination, precisely matching the intensity and color of the faint overhead light to render themselves nearly invisible to predators. Their large, tubular eyes are often fixed upward, allowing them to detect subtle movements.

Barreleyes

Barreleyes (e.g., Macropinna microstoma) are particularly distinctive, featuring a transparent, fluid-filled dome over their heads, through which their large, tubular eyes are visible. These specialized eyes typically point upward to scan for prey, but some species can rotate them forward to focus on food. The green pigment in their eyes may help filter out sunlight and detect the bioluminescence of other organisms. Barreleyes often hover motionless, using their large, flat fins to maintain position while ambushing small prey like zooplankton and jellies.

Fish in the twilight zone play a significant role in the global marine ecosystem, particularly in the “biological pump,” a process of carbon sequestration. Organisms in the twilight zone consume organic matter, including phytoplankton and zooplankton, that sinks or migrates from surface waters.
