The fissure extends downwards to nearly meet the corpus callosum, highlighting their close anatomical relationship.

One significant structure found within this deep groove is the falx cerebri. This large, crescent-shaped fold is composed of dura mater, a protective layer that surrounds the brain.
The falx cerebri dips vertically into the longitudinal fissure, providing stability to the cerebral hemispheres. Its presence prevents excessive side-to-side movement of the brain within the skull. Major blood vessels, particularly venous sinuses, are associated with this dural fold. The superior sagittal sinus, for instance, runs along the upper attached margin of the falx cerebri. This sinus collects deoxygenated blood and cerebrospinal fluid from the brain.
Importance of Hemispheric Separation
The separation of the brain into two distinct cerebral hemispheres by the longitudinal fissure has functional implications. This allows for hemispheric lateralization, where each hemisphere specializes in certain functions. For example, language processing is predominantly handled by the left hemisphere, while the right often specializes in spatial awareness and facial recognition.
Despite these specialized roles, the two hemispheres are far from isolated. They engage in extensive communication, primarily facilitated by the corpus callosum. This massive bundle of nerve fibers enables rapid transfer of information, allowing the hemispheres to work together seamlessly.
