What Does the Great Black Wasp Eat?

The Great Black Wasp (Sphex pensylvanicus) is a striking member of the thread-waisted wasp family native to North America. This solitary species is one of the largest wasps on the continent, with females reaching lengths up to 35 millimeters. Its imposing appearance is defined by a deep, velvety black body and wings that possess a distinctive, iridescent sheen. Unlike social wasps, the Great Black Wasp is a solitary hunter that constructs individual nests for its offspring, leading to two distinct dietary needs.

The Adult Energy Source

The diet of the mature Great Black Wasp focuses on obtaining simple carbohydrates necessary for flight and daily maintenance. Adults sustain themselves by consuming nectar from flowering plants and occasionally feeding on tree sap. This nectar-feeding behavior makes the Great Black Wasp an important pollinator in the ecosystems it inhabits.

The wasps also supplement their diet with other sugary secretions, such as honeydew produced by aphids and scale insects. The adult wasp’s existence is fueled by these sugars, contrasting sharply with the carnivorous requirements of their young.

Prey for the Developing Larvae

The adult female dedicates her hunting efforts entirely to provisioning her young, as the larval stage requires a high-protein, carnivorous diet. The prey consists exclusively of large insects from the order Orthoptera, including grasshoppers, crickets, and katydids. These insects are often significant in size, sometimes rivaling the length of the wasp itself.

The female targets these large orthopterans to ensure an ample food supply for her developing offspring. This selection of herbivores makes the Great Black Wasp a beneficial natural control agent in fields and gardens. The prey is not killed outright but is paralyzed, preserving the insect as a fresh, living meal for the larva upon hatching.

Securing the Meal The Hunting Process

The provisioning process begins when the female wasp locates suitable prey and delivers a highly specialized sting. The venom is precisely aimed at the host insect’s nerve ganglia, which control movement. This targeted injection induces permanent paralysis, immobilizing the prey without ending its life.

After paralyzing the insect, the female must transport the heavy, living body back to her underground nest. As a digger wasp, she excavates a burrow in the soil that contains a series of individual cells or chambers. The wasp typically drags the heavy prey along the ground, sometimes flying short distances while carrying it, before pulling it into the burrow.

Once the immobilized prey is secured within a chamber, the female deposits a single egg on its body. She then seals the chamber with a plug of soil or debris to protect the developing larva from predators and parasites. The hatched larva consumes the paralyzed host over the course of its development, ensuring a fresh protein source throughout its growth.
