Palladium (chemical symbol Pd, atomic number 46) is an element known for its rarity and versatile role in modern technologies. It is a member of the platinum group metals (PGMs), a collection of six elements that share similar characteristics and occur naturally together in the Earth’s crust. The largest demand for the metal comes from the automotive sector, where it is a primary component in catalytic converters. Palladium facilitates the conversion of harmful exhaust gases, such as carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides, into less toxic compounds like carbon dioxide and nitrogen.

Palladium is also utilized in the electronics industry for its conductivity and resistance to corrosion. It is frequently found in multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs), components necessary for energy storage and control in devices like smartphones and laptops. The metal’s stability at high temperatures makes it suitable for these applications.
