Naturalizing focuses on creating a self-sustaining population that multiplies over time, giving the impression of a wild meadow or woodland floor bursting with color.

Naturalizing daffodils is a planting approach that seeks to establish bulbs in an informal setting where they can thrive and spread with minimal human intervention. The term describes planting done in a loose, scattered manner, avoiding the straight lines and geometric patterns of traditional gardening. A successfully naturalized daffodil possesses the hardiness to return and multiply annually without needing to be dug up or replanted each season. This self-propagating ability is achieved through the production of small offset bulbs, or “bulbets,” which remain in the soil and grow into new flowering plants. The goal is to create a long-term, low-maintenance display that expands over time.

Selecting the Site and Bulbs

The best naturalizing daffodils are robust, older cultivars or species varieties known for vigorous multiplication and longevity. Smaller varieties, such as the miniature ‘Tête à Tête’ or the triandrus daffodil ‘Hawera,’ are especially well-suited for naturalizing, though larger types like ‘Dutch Master’ and ‘Mount Hood’ also perform reliably.
