Because pool water chemistry is constantly influenced by environmental factors, routine adjustments using muriatic acid are necessary for proper upkeep.

Lowering pH and Total Alkalinity

The fundamental purpose of introducing muriatic acid is to manage pH and total alkalinity, both of which tend to rise over time. Muriatic acid, a strong acid, releases hydrogen ions into the water when it dissolves, driving the reduction of both parameters. High pH levels, ideally maintained between 7.2 and 7.6, significantly reduce chlorine efficacy. A pH reading above this target range also promotes calcium carbonate scale formation, which can lead to cloudy water and deposits on pool surfaces and equipment.

The hydrogen ions introduced by the acid neutralize basic substances in the water, specifically hydroxide and carbonate/bicarbonate ions. This neutralization process directly lowers the pH, which is a measure of the hydrogen ion concentration. Total alkalinity (TA) is a measure of the water’s ability to resist changes in pH, acting as a buffer against acidity.
