For instance, a fertilizer labeled 24-4-8 contains 24% nitrogen, 4% phosphate, and 8% potash by weight.
This standardized ratio guides the fertilizer’s intended use and concentration. Nitrogen is the first number, Phosphorus (as Phosphate) is the second, and Potassium (as Potash) is the third. Since turfgrass requires significantly more nitrogen for shoot growth, lawn-specific fertilizers often feature a much higher first number, such as 32-0-4.
The specific ratio selected dictates the product’s focus. A high first number (Nitrogen) promotes deep green color and vigorous vegetative growth. Conversely, a higher middle number (Phosphate) is often found in starter fertilizers for new lawns because phosphorus is necessary for early root establishment. Quick-release fertilizers are water-soluble; the nutrients dissolve rapidly upon watering and become immediately available for plant uptake. This immediate availability results in a fast, noticeable green-up, often within a few days, providing a rapid boost for addressing deficiencies.
However, the rapid dissolution of quick-release formulas carries a higher risk of “burning” the turf if over-applied due to high salt content.
