A licensed practical nurse (LPN) provides hands-on patient care under the direction of registered nurses and physicians. LPNs handle essential daily tasks like administering medications, monitoring vital signs, and performing basic wound care. They are one of the fastest entry points into nursing, with training programs that typically take about a year to complete.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

The core of an LPN’s work is direct patient care. On a typical shift, that means taking blood pressure, temperature, and weight readings, then reporting changes to the supervising nurse or physician. LPNs give medications as prescribed, clean and bandage wounds, help patients with bathing and dressing, and update health records throughout the day.

Beyond these routine tasks, LPNs perform what’s called a focused assessment. This means evaluating a patient’s most pressing condition at the time of interaction, developing a short-term care plan around it, carrying out those interventions, and then tracking whether the patient improves. If something falls outside the existing care plan or looks unexpected, the LPN communicates that information to the registered nurse or physician in charge and follows their direction. This back-and-forth communication is a constant part of the job, not an occasional event.

Where LPNs Work

Nursing homes and long-term care facilities employ the largest share of LPNs. In these settings, LPNs often serve as the primary nursing presence on the floor, handling medication rounds, monitoring chronic conditions, and coordinating with physicians who visit periodically. Hospitals, home health agencies, physician offices, and rehabilitation centers also hire LPNs, though the ratio of LPNs to RNs tends to be lower in acute hospital settings where patient conditions change rapidly.

Home health is a growing segment of LPN work. In a patient’s home, an LPN might manage wound care after surgery, administer prescribed medications, check vital signs, and teach family members how to assist with daily care. The work is more independent than a hospital floor, but the LPN still reports to a supervising RN or physician.

How LPNs Differ From Registered Nurses

The biggest difference is scope. Registered nurses monitor, treat, and educate patients using a holistic approach that accounts for physical, psychological, and spiritual needs. They coordinate across care teams and can independently develop comprehensive care plans. LPNs provide what the American Nurses Association describes as “basic care,” offering detailed assistance to RNs and physicians by monitoring patient health, updating records, and carrying out treatments.

In practical terms, this means LPNs cannot conduct assessments or create care plans outside the framework set by the supervising RN or physician. If a patient’s situation changes in a way the existing plan doesn’t cover, the LPN collects data and hands it off rather than making independent clinical decisions. Some states also restrict LPNs from certain tasks like starting IV lines or administering blood products, though these rules vary by state.

The education gap reflects this difference in responsibility. LPN programs take roughly one year and require about 1,350 hours of study. RN programs require either a two-year associate degree or a four-year bachelor’s degree, and both tracks involve considerably more clinical training. LPNs pass the NCLEX-PN exam; RNs pass the more comprehensive NCLEX-RN.

Education and Licensing Requirements

To become an LPN, you need a high school diploma or equivalent and admission to an accredited practical nursing certificate program. These programs average about 45 weeks and blend classroom instruction in anatomy, pharmacology, and nursing fundamentals with supervised clinical rotations. After completing the program, you sit for the NCLEX-PN, the national licensure exam. Passing it allows you to apply for a license through your state’s Board of Nursing.

Every state requires LPNs to maintain current credentials, which typically means completing continuing education hours on a regular renewal cycle. The specific number of hours and renewal period varies by state.

Certifications That Expand Your Role

Once licensed, LPNs can pursue post-licensure certifications that open doors to specialized work and higher pay. The National Association for Practical Nurse Education and Service (NAPNES) offers three main certifications: pharmacology, long-term care, and IV therapy. Each involves passing an exam and earns a credential you can add to your professional title.

The IV therapy certification is particularly valuable because many states restrict LPNs from performing IV-related tasks without additional training. Earning this credential can qualify you for roles in hospitals and infusion centers that would otherwise require an RN. The long-term care certification signals expertise in geriatric nursing, which is relevant given that nursing homes and assisted living facilities are the largest employers of LPNs. Additional certifications in areas like case management and first responder care are also in development.

Salary and Job Outlook

The median annual wage for LPNs was $62,340 as of May 2024, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Pay varies significantly by setting and geography. LPNs in metropolitan hospitals and home health agencies tend to earn more than those in rural nursing homes, and states with higher costs of living generally offer higher wages.

Employment is projected to grow about 3 percent from 2024 to 2034. That’s roughly average for all occupations, but the raw number of openings is substantial because of the size of the workforce and steady turnover. An aging population that needs more long-term care, combined with ongoing demand in home health, keeps job prospects solid. Many LPNs also use the role as a stepping stone, working as an LPN while completing an RN bridge program to advance their career and earning potential.
