What Does a Ladybug Eat and Drink?

Ladybugs, also known as ladybirds or lady beetles, are familiar insects often spotted in gardens. This article will explore the specific dietary habits of ladybugs and how they obtain the necessary hydration to survive.

What Ladybugs Primarily Consume

Ladybugs are primarily recognized for their predatory nature, with soft-bodied insect pests forming the majority of their diet. Aphids are their most common and preferred food source due to their abundance, soft bodies, and nutritional content. Both adult ladybugs and their larvae are voracious aphid predators. An adult ladybug can consume up to 50-75 aphids per day. Ladybug larvae are also highly effective, with some consuming around 400 aphids during their two to three-week developmental stage.

When aphid populations are low, ladybugs adapt their diet to include other small, soft-bodied insects and insect eggs. These secondary food sources can include scale insects, mealybugs, spider mites, thrips, and whiteflies. Some ladybug species also consume moth eggs and small caterpillars. This varied diet helps them survive when their primary prey is scarce, reinforcing their role as generalist predators in many environments.

Beyond insect prey, some ladybug species supplement their carnivorous diet with plant-based materials. They may consume pollen and nectar, which provide essential sugars for energy. Honeydew, a sugary excretion from aphids, also serves as a supplementary food source. While some species might occasionally consume fruit juices or plant sap, ladybugs generally do not eat or damage plants. This highlights their beneficial role in gardens by controlling pests without harming vegetation.

How Ladybugs Stay Hydrated

Ladybugs require water. They typically obtain moisture from various natural sources within their environment. Dew droplets and raindrops are common ways for ladybugs to access water, especially during early mornings or after rainfall. They can be observed absorbing these tiny droplets from plant surfaces.

A significant portion of a ladybug’s water intake also comes from the moisture content within the soft-bodied insects they consume. When a ladybug feeds on an aphid, for instance, it extracts not only nutrients but also the bodily fluids of its prey. This provides a consistent source of hydration that complements external water sources.

Ladybugs do not drink water in the same manner as larger animals. Instead of lapping or sipping from open pools, they absorb tiny droplets. They can use their mouthparts to draw in moisture, similar to how they consume the internal fluids of their prey. Adequate hydration is important for their metabolic processes. Providing access to water, such as a shallow dish with pebbles, can help support ladybug populations, especially in drier conditions.
