The profession is formally organized around eight areas of responsibility, verified by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing (NCHEC). These areas define what health educators are trained and expected to do: assess community needs and capacity, plan programs, implement those programs, evaluate results through research and data, advocate for health policies, communicate with the public and stakeholders, lead and manage teams, and maintain ethical and professional standards.

In practice, this means a health educator might spend one week surveying a neighborhood to understand barriers to diabetes screening, then spend the next month designing an outreach campaign based on what they found. They write grant proposals to fund those programs, build partnerships with clinics or schools to deliver them, and then track whether the programs actually changed anything. Success might be measured by how many people completed a screening, whether participants adopted healthier behaviors, improvements in medication adherence, or even changes in local health policy.

Where Health Educators Work

Ambulatory healthcare services (clinics, outpatient centers) employ 17%, and hospitals employ 15%. Social assistance organizations account for 7%, and finance and insurance companies make up 5%. Nonprofits, school districts, and corporate wellness departments round out the picture.

The setting shapes the day-to-day work considerably. A health educator at a hospital might focus on patient education materials and reducing readmission rates. Someone at a nonprofit could spend most of their time writing grants, running community workshops, and coordinating with local organizations. In a government role, the work often centers on population-level data, policy advocacy, and large-scale public health campaigns. Corporate health educators typically design wellness initiatives, coordinate health screenings, and track employee participation.

Daily Tasks and Workflow

Health educators rarely do the same thing every day. A typical week might include gathering and analyzing health data for a target population, meeting with community stakeholders or partner organizations, developing educational materials with writers and graphic designers, training staff on new program guidelines, and presenting findings to supervisors or government officials.

Much of the work happens behind the scenes. Health educators establish relationships that give them access to data, involve priority populations in planning, secure funding, and deliver training to the people who will run programs on the ground. The human side is equally important. Health literacy communication is central to the role. Cultural competency isn’t optional; programs that ignore the values and lived experiences of their target population fail.

Health educators also need strong organizational and leadership skills, since they often manage budgets, coordinate multiple partners, and oversee program timelines simultaneously.

Education and Certification

A bachelor’s degree is the minimum requirement to enter the field. The most direct path is a degree explicitly in health education, community health education, public health education, or school health education. If your degree is in a related field, you can still qualify for national certification by completing at least 25 semester credits (or 37 quarter hours) of coursework aligned with the eight areas of responsibility, with at least 12 of those credits coming from process-focused courses.

The entry-level credential is the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) designation, awarded through NCHEC after passing a national exam. Students within 90 days of graduation can sit for the exam early with advisor verification. For those with at least five years of experience, the Master Certified Health Education Specialist (MCHES) credential recognizes advanced competencies in areas like strategic planning, budget management, staff development, and ethical leadership.

Health Educators vs. Community Health Workers

These two roles overlap in mission but differ in scope and training. Community health workers provide direct outreach, informal counseling, and help connect individuals to resources like cancer screenings or social services. They may not hold a college degree, and their certification requirements vary by state.

Health educators, by contrast, hold at least a bachelor’s degree and are credentialed through a national certification program. The key distinction is level of involvement: community health workers help people access existing programs, while health educators create those programs. That means gathering research, analyzing data, securing funding and staff, designing curricula, and monitoring outcomes. Health educators are also more likely to fill leadership positions, communicate with media and policymakers, and drive strategic decisions about public health initiatives.

Both roles are essential, and they frequently collaborate. A health educator might design a diabetes prevention program and train the community health workers who deliver it in neighborhoods.

Salary and Job Outlook

The median annual salary for health education specialists was $62,860 as of May 2023, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Pay varies significantly by setting and location. Government and hospital positions tend to offer higher salaries, while nonprofit roles may pay less but offer different kinds of flexibility or mission-driven work.
