Wolf spiders, belonging to the family Lycosidae, are robust and hairy arachnids found across diverse habitats worldwide, including North America. Their name, derived from the Ancient Greek word “lykos” meaning “wolf,” reflects their active hunting style. These spiders are characterized by strong, long legs and a distinctive eye arrangement, featuring eight eyes in three rows: four small ones on the bottom, two very large eyes in the middle, and two medium-sized eyes on top. Their distinctive eye arrangement, with two very large central eyes, grants them excellent eyesight, a crucial adaptation for their predatory lifestyle.
Primary Prey

Wolf spiders possess powerful jaws, or chelicerae, designed to grip prey firmly. Once captured, they inject venom to immobilize the victim, which quickly paralyzes or kills it. Their excellent vision allows them to hunt effectively, particularly at night, as their eyes have a reflective tissue called a tapetum lucidum that enhances low-light vision. Their enhanced low-light vision enables them to detect the slightest movements of prey and gauge distance with precision before attacking.
