Sea spiders, also known as pycnogonids, are marine arthropods found worldwide. Despite their name, they are not true spiders but belong to the unique class Pycnogonida, characterized by small bodies and long legs. Understanding their diet helps clarify their role in marine ecosystems.

The Typical Diet of Sea Spiders

Most sea spider species are carnivorous, feeding on soft-bodied invertebrates found on the ocean floor. Their primary food sources include cnidarians like sea anemones, hydroids, and jellies. They also prey on sponges, bryozoans, and various worms, such as polychaetes, ribbon worms, and peanut worms. This diet classifies them as predators, though their feeding interactions can sometimes resemble parasitism. For instance, when feeding on sea anemones, sea spiders often extract fluids without killing the host, allowing the anemone to survive.

Sea spiders consume sessile or slow-moving organisms, given their own slow locomotion. Some species also scavenge on dead organic matter. While most are carnivores, a few species consume algae, indicating broader dietary flexibility. Their feeding strategies are adapted to efficiently process these soft-bodied marine organisms.

Specialized Feeding Mechanisms

Sea spiders possess a feeding appendage called a proboscis, a long, tubular mouthpart used to consume prey. This proboscis varies in size and flexibility among species, but its primary function involves piercing the prey’s tissues. Once pierced, the sea spider uses its proboscis to suck internal fluids and liquefied tissues from the prey.

The feeding process involves external digestion, where digestive enzymes are secreted into the prey through the proboscis. These enzymes break down the prey’s internal structures, turning them into a digestible liquid for ingestion. The proboscis contains a muscular pharynx that aids in drawing food into the digestive tract, which, unusually for arthropods, extends into their long legs. Some species may also have chelifores, claw-like appendages, or palps that assist in manipulating food items during feeding.

Diversity in Diet Among Species

While a general pattern of feeding on soft-bodied invertebrates exists, the specific dietary choices among sea spider species show some variation. This diversity can be influenced by factors such as habitat, the sea spider’s size, and specific anatomical adaptations. Some species may act as generalist feeders, consuming a wider range of available prey, while others exhibit highly specialized dietary preferences.

For example, certain deep-sea Sericosura species have developed a nutritional strategy by farming and consuming methylotrophic bacteria on their exoskeletons. These bacteria, which can oxidize methane and methanol, provide a carbon source for the sea spiders, representing a specialized adaptation to chemosynthetic environments. Such variations highlight that despite shared feeding mechanisms, sea spider diets are not entirely uniform across the more than 1,300 known species.
