The foundation of a captive diet is typically high-quality grass hay, such as alfalfa or high-fiber orchard grass hay, provided ad libitum. This roughage is supplemented with specialized commercial herbivore pellets that are high in fiber and fortified with essential vitamins and minerals. Pellets are rationed carefully, often limited to less than 2% of the animal’s body weight daily, to prevent excessive weight gain.

A variety of fresh produce, including leafy greens, root vegetables, and browse like willow or banana leaves, is offered to provide micronutrients and enrichment. Cultivated fruits are generally given in strict moderation or avoided entirely because their high sugar content can cause abnormal fermentation in the hippo’s gut.
