These paws are also strong enough to break through snow and ice to access seal dens.

A thick layer of blubber serves as insulation in frigid waters and acts as a vital energy reserve during periods of food scarcity. Their digestive system is highly efficient at metabolizing fat, which is essential for sustaining their large body size and energy requirements in their cold habitat.

Sea ice is crucial as it provides the platform from which polar bears hunt seals.
