Panthers move silently through their habitat, stalking prey low to the ground and freezing their motion to avoid detection. Once close, they launch a powerful ambush, rushing short distances and springing up to 15 feet to capture their target. They use sharp claws to grasp prey around the neck and shoulders, with hind claws digging into the flanks to secure it; large prey is typically killed with a precise bite to the back of the neck, severing the spinal cord, or by a suffocating bite to the throat, while smaller animals may be killed with a bite to the skull. Jaguars possess a powerful bite, capable of crushing turtle shells or delivering a fatal skull bite, and leopards demonstrate impressive strength, often dragging carcasses heavier than themselves into trees to protect them from scavengers.
