Manatees are large, gentle marine mammals known for their slow-moving nature and calm demeanor. These aquatic creatures are strict herbivores, meaning their entire diet consists of plants. This diet is fundamental to their survival in diverse aquatic environments.
Primary Food Sources
Manatees primarily consume aquatic vegetation found in both freshwater and saltwater habitats. In marine environments, seagrasses constitute a major part of their diet, including species like turtle grass, manatee grass, and shoal grass. They are known to consume all seven species of seagrass found in Florida and may also occasionally graze on mangrove leaves.
When manatees inhabit freshwater areas like rivers, springs, and canals, their diet shifts to available aquatic plants. These include submerged and floating vegetation such as hydrilla, water hyacinths, water lettuce, eelgrass, coontail, and pickerelweed. Manatees are opportunistic feeders, consuming any plant life they encounter. Algae also forms an occasional, less significant, part of their diet.
Manatees consume a substantial amount of vegetation to maintain their large body size. They eat between 4% to 15% of their body weight in aquatic plants daily. For an average 1,000-pound adult manatee, this means consuming around 99 to 150 pounds of food per day. This high volume of fibrous plant material is important for their nutritional needs.
Foraging and Consumption
Manatees have specific behaviors and unique anatomical features that facilitate their diet. They use their foreflippers to guide food towards their mouths, assisting in vegetation gathering. Their mouths feature large, muscular, and flexible prehensile lips, which can move independently to grasp and tear aquatic plants. These specialized lips allow them to effectively manipulate their food.
Behind their lips, manatees have horny, ridged pads on the roof of their mouth and lower jaw. These pads work with their molars to break down vegetation into smaller pieces. Manatees have a unique dental adaptation: their molars are continuously replaced throughout their lives. New teeth emerge at the back of the jaw and move forward, replacing worn-out front molars. This continuous tooth replacement helps them cope with the abrasive nature of their diet, which often contains sand.
Manatees are slow grazers, spending up to eight hours a day feeding. Their digestive system is adapted for processing large quantities of fibrous plant material. As hindgut fermenters, similar to horses, much of their digestive process occurs in the large intestine. This digestive efficiency allows them to extract nutrients from their low-calorie plant diet, with digesta passage times ranging from 4 to 10 days.
The Role of Their Diet in Ecosystems

As large aquatic herbivores, they help maintain the health and structure of seagrass beds and other aquatic plant communities.
