Alligator-shaped ladybug larvae are highly active and consume substantial prey. They are often more voracious predators than adult ladybugs, eating hundreds of aphids during their development. A larva can consume about 400 medium-sized aphids before pupating. The pupal stage is non-feeding, as the insect transforms into its adult form. Adult ladybugs continue to feed on soft-bodied insects.

While soft-bodied insects are the primary food source, ladybugs supplement their diet with other materials, especially when prey is scarce. Pollen and nectar serve as important additional food sources, providing essential sugars and energy. Many species seek nectar from various wildflowers.
Honeydew, a sugary liquid secreted by aphids and other sap-sucking insects, is another supplemental food source for ladybugs, offering a quick energy boost. Certain species may also consume fungal spores or mildew when insect prey is not readily available. Some omnivorous species might feed on soft fruits, especially when insect populations decline in late summer or early fall.
