Komodo dragons, the largest living lizards on Earth, are apex predators native to the islands of Indonesia. They have a diverse diet, reflecting their adaptability and biological traits. What Komodo Dragons Hunt
Komodo dragons are skilled hunters, preying on a variety of animals within their range. They target large mammals like deer, wild boar, and goats, which form a significant portion of their diet. They employ an ambush hunting strategy, patiently waiting along game trails for victims.

Komodo dragons are also opportunistic scavengers. They have an exceptional sense of smell, detecting carrion from miles away. This allows them to locate deceased animals like buffalo, deer, or pig carcasses. Scavenging provides a reliable food source, especially when hunting is less successful or large animals die naturally.
This behavior contributes to the decomposition process. Komodo dragons travel considerable distances to reach a carcass, sometimes congregating to feed on a single large find. This dual strategy maximizes their chances of survival, providing flexibility in foraging based on food availability.
Unique Feeding Biology
Komodo dragons have biological adaptations that allow them to consume large quantities of food. Their jaws are flexible, and skulls have loose joints, enabling them to open their mouths wide. This flexibility, combined with an expandable stomach, allows them to swallow large pieces of meat whole, often consuming up to 80% of their body weight in one feeding. This food intake is digested slowly, supported by their slow metabolism.
Their neck muscles aid in tearing and swallowing large chunks of meat, often with a rapid, violent shaking motion. Their venom contains bacteria that contribute to tissue breakdown, aiding digestion. After a large meal, a Komodo dragon can go for extended periods, sometimes weeks or months, without needing to eat again. This energy storage and slow metabolic rate help their survival where large prey might not be consistently available.
Variations in Their Diet
The diet of Komodo dragons varies depending on their age, size, and prey availability. Juvenile Komodo dragons typically feed on smaller prey than adults. Young dragons consume insects, small lizards, geckos, and birds, often living in trees to avoid predation by larger adults. This arboreal existence protects them as they grow, and their diet shifts with size.
