This reliance on plankton highlights their role as consumers of abundant food sources.
Beyond plankton, many jellyfish species also consume small fish. Larger jellyfish species can prey on crustaceans like shrimp and crabs, or occasionally, other jellyfish. The specific composition of their diet often depends on what is readily available in their immediate environment, making them opportunistic feeders.
Mastering the Catch: How Jellyfish Feed
Jellyfish employ specialized anatomical features to capture food. Their tentacles, which hang from the bell-shaped body, are equipped with stinging cells called nematocysts. When prey makes contact, these nematocysts rapidly fire, injecting venom that paralyzes or kills prey. This mechanism allows jellyfish to subdue prey, without teeth or claws.
Once prey is immobilized, oral arms, near the mouth on the underside of the bell, maneuver food towards the mouth. The mouth then leads into a gastrovascular cavity, which functions as both a stomach for digestion and waste expulsion. Some jellyfish species, such as moon jellyfish, are suspension feeders, using a filtering system or cilia on their oral arms to collect food particles.

The diet of a jellyfish is not uniform across all species or throughout its life cycle. Different species exhibit specialized feeding habits based on their size, habitat, and available food sources. For instance, while most jellyfish are carnivorous, some species, like the spotted jellyfish, can obtain nutrients from symbiotic algae through photosynthesis.
Jellyfish undergo a complex life cycle that includes distinct stages, each with varied dietary needs. After fertilization, a larva develops into a polyp, which is a small, sessile form attached to a surface. These polyps feed by capturing small animals from the water with their tentacles. As the polyp matures, it can produce free-swimming juvenile jellyfish, known as ephyrae, which then grow into adult medusae. Environmental factors such as water temperature and nutrient availability can also influence the types and abundance of prey, affecting a jellyfish’s diet.
