What Do Jellyfish Eat? Their Diet and Feeding Methods

Jellyfish are captivating marine invertebrates found across the world’s oceans. These creatures possess a simple yet effective anatomy that allows them to thrive in diverse aquatic environments. Despite their seemingly passive nature, jellyfish are active carnivores, relying on specialized feeding mechanisms to capture and consume their prey.

Primary Food Sources

Jellyfish primarily consume small organisms that drift or swim in ocean currents. Their diet largely consists of zooplankton, which includes microscopic animals such as copepods, krill, rotifers, tunicate larvae, protozoans, and diatoms. Small crustaceans, like shrimp, crabs, and amphipods, also form a significant part of their diet. Some jellyfish species will also prey on small fish, fish larvae, and even the eggs of other marine animals.

These prey items are well-suited for jellyfish due to their abundance in marine ecosystems and the jellyfish’s opportunistic feeding strategy. As jellyfish drift, their tentacles act as a living net, encountering small organisms. The passive nature of many food sources makes them ideal targets, as jellyfish generally do not actively pursue fast-moving prey.

Jellyfish can also exhibit cannibalistic tendencies, consuming other jellyfish species. This behavior highlights their role as adaptable predators. When food is plentiful, jellyfish grow rapidly and reproduce in large numbers, demonstrating their efficiency in converting prey into biomass.

How Jellyfish Eat

Jellyfish employ a sophisticated mechanism to capture and ingest food, despite their simple body plan. Their tentacles are equipped with stinging cells called nematocysts. When prey contacts a tentacle, these nematocysts rapidly fire, injecting venom that paralyzes or stuns the victim.

Once prey is immobilized, the jellyfish uses its oral arms to maneuver food towards its mouth. These oral arms are muscular extensions around the central mouth opening, guiding the captured meal. The mouth is a single aperture serving as both the entry point for food and the exit point for waste.

Digestion occurs within the gastrovascular cavity, also known as the coelenteron. Cells lining this cavity produce digestive enzymes that break down food. Nutrients are then absorbed by these lining cells, nourishing the jellyfish. Digestion is relatively quick, often taking one to three hours, allowing the jellyfish to efficiently process meals.

After nutrient extraction, undigested waste is expelled through the same mouth opening. This simple, one-way system ensures continuous feeding and nutrient processing. The entire feeding process, from capture to waste expulsion, is streamlined and effective for these predators.

Dietary Diversity

Jellyfish exhibit considerable dietary diversity, with prey varying among species, size, and life stage. Some jellyfish, like the moon jellyfish (Aurelia aurita), are filter feeders. They capture tiny zooplankton and other microscopic particles using mucus nets and ciliary action.

Box jellyfish (Cubozoa) are active and agile hunters. Unlike many other jellyfish that drift passively, box jellyfish pursue prey, often including small fish, crustaceans, and other jellyfish. Their advanced visual structures, multiple eyes, aid in navigating and tracking targets.

The lion’s mane jellyfish (Cyanea capillata), one of the largest species, preys on a wider range of organisms, including fish larvae, small crustaceans, and other jellyfish like moon jellies. Their extensive tentacles create a wide net to ensnare prey. Diet can also influence a jellyfish’s appearance, with some species displaying colors based on food pigments.

Some jellyfish show shifts in diet throughout their life cycle. For example, comb jelly larvae (ctenophores), often mistaken for true jellyfish, may initially feed on phytoplankton before transitioning to crustacean zooplankton as they grow larger. This adaptability allows jellyfish to exploit food resources in various marine environments.
