How Jellyfish Capture Food

Jellyfish employ specialized mechanisms to capture their prey, primarily utilizing stinging cells called nematocysts. These cells are located on their tentacles and release venom upon contact, stunning or paralyzing their prey. Once immobilized, the tentacles contract, bringing the food to the oral arms and then the mouth.

Many jellyfish species adopt a passive feeding strategy, drifting through the water with their tentacles extended like a living net. As potential prey brushes against these tentacles, the nematocysts fire, securing the meal. The captured food then enters a single opening leading to a central gastrovascular cavity where digestion takes place. Some species, like the box jellyfish, are more active hunters, pursuing their food.

Dietary Diversity Among Species

The diet of jellyfish can vary considerably, influenced by factors such as their species, size, life stage, and the specific marine environment they inhabit. Larger jellyfish consume a broader range of prey, including shrimp and other fish, due to their increased tentacle length and bell size. In contrast, smaller jellyfish or juveniles focus on microzooplankton, phytoplankton, and eggs.

Some jellyfish have developed specialized diets. For instance, moon jellyfish primarily consume zooplankton, but their diet can also include comb jellies, fish eggs, and detritus.
