Distinctive Physical Characteristics
Hummingbird nests are notably small, often compared to the size of a thimble. A typical Ruby-throated hummingbird nest measures about 1 to 1.75 inches in outside diameter and 1 to 2 inches in height, with an inner cup roughly the size of a large thimble. These cup-shaped nests feature a soft, velvety interior. The exterior often blends seamlessly with the branch it rests upon, appearing like a natural knot or bump on the wood.
The color of the nest typically matches its surroundings, often adorned with greenish-gray lichens and moss. This gives the nest a camouflaged appearance, making it difficult to spot in nature. The texture of the nest is generally soft and fuzzy, yet it possesses a surprising elasticity. This flexibility allows the nest to stretch and expand as the fast-growing chicks increase in size, accommodating them until they are ready to fledge.
Ingenious Construction Materials
Female hummingbirds are the sole architects of their nests, using a variety of natural materials. These fluffy fibers provide insulation and a soft surface for the eggs and hatchlings. Hummingbirds gather this sticky, strong, and stretchy material, using it to weave the structure and anchor it firmly to branches. Hummingbird nests are typically found in locations that offer protection from wind, sun, and rain, and are often concealed from predators. They commonly build their nests on slender, downward-sloping branches of deciduous trees like oak, sweetgum, maple, or hackberry, and sometimes in pines. Nest height can vary significantly, ranging from about 4 to 8 feet above ground for some species near streams or washes, to 10 to 50 feet or even up to 90 feet high in trees or shrubs. Nests are often situated near water sources or an abundance of nectar-rich flowering plants, providing easy access to food.
The appearance of the nest plays a significant role in its strategic placement. The use of lichen and moss on the exterior, secured by spider silk, makes the nest appear like a natural part of the branch, resembling a small knot or growth. This natural camouflage is so effective that even when looking directly at a nest, it can be incredibly difficult to distinguish from its surroundings.
