What Do Great Blue Herons Eat? Their Diet and Prey

Great Blue Herons are prominent wading birds, widely recognized across North America for their distinctive appearance and widespread presence near aquatic habitats. These birds are skilled predators, frequently observed in wetlands, along riverbanks, and in coastal areas. Their striking size and patient demeanor make them a familiar sight in diverse aquatic environments.

Main Dietary Staples

Fish form the primary component of the Great Blue Heron’s diet. While they can capture various sizes, they typically prefer small to medium-sized fish, around 10 to 20 centimeters in length. Species commonly consumed include flounder, sticklebacks, sculpins, perch, bass, carp, and minnows, varying by regional availability. In some areas, such as Nova Scotia, flounder can constitute as much as 98% of their fish intake.

Amphibians are a consistent food source. Frogs, including leopard frogs and American bullfrogs, are readily taken, as are salamanders and toads. Large aquatic insects also contribute significantly to their diet, with dragonflies, grasshoppers, and water beetles being common prey items.

Diverse Food Choices

Great Blue Herons exhibit highly opportunistic and adaptable feeding habits. They frequently prey on small mammals such as voles, mice, shrews, rats, and ground squirrels, especially in upland areas or when fish are less abundant. Studies in regions like Idaho have shown voles can make up 24% to 40% of their diet.

Reptiles are also part of their diet, including snakes, lizards, and small turtles. Herons have been observed taking large snakes, some measuring over a meter in length. Small birds, such as ducklings, young marsh birds, and even other small waterbirds, may be caught when opportunities arise. Crustaceans, including crayfish, shrimp, and crabs, supplement their diet, especially in coastal or estuarine habitats.

How They Hunt

Great Blue Herons employ distinctive hunting techniques that rely on patience and precision. They often stand motionless for extended periods in shallow water, waiting for prey to come within striking distance. They may also wade slowly and deliberately through the water, taking cautious steps to avoid disturbing their targets.

Once prey is spotted, the heron executes a rapid, powerful thrust of its long, sharp bill to spear or grasp the animal. Their eyesight is instrumental in this process, providing detailed vision approximately three times sharper than humans and allowing for good depth perception. This visual acuity enables them to hunt effectively both during the day and at night. After capture, prey is swallowed whole, headfirst, to prevent obstruction.

Their ability to adapt allows them to forage successfully in diverse aquatic environments, including freshwater marshes, saltwater estuaries, rivers, and ponds.
