What Do Fire Ants Do? Stings, Nests & Ecological Impact

Fire ants are small, reddish-brown insects known for their aggressive nature. Measuring 1.5 to 5 millimeters, they inhabit diverse environments. Their presence is often marked by distinctive soil structures. Understanding them involves examining their social organization and environmental interactions.

How Fire Ant Colonies Operate

Fire ant colonies are highly organized social structures with distinct roles, including a queen or multiple queens, winged reproductives, and numerous sterile female worker ants. The queen’s primary function is reproduction, laying eggs that develop into the colony’s members, and she influences the colony through chemical signals called pheromones.

Worker ants undertake various tasks, including building and maintaining the nest, caring for the queen and brood, defending the colony, and foraging for food. They construct characteristic dome-shaped mounds of loose soil, the visible part of elaborate underground tunnel systems. These mounds, up to 60 centimeters high, regulate temperature and moisture, with ants moving deeper underground during extreme heat or cold. Tunnels can extend several feet from the mound and lack a visible entry hole.

Fire Ant Foraging and Diet

Fire ants are omnivorous, consuming a diverse diet of plant and animal matter, including seeds, young plants, insects, spiders, earthworms, small vertebrates, and carrion. They also feed on honeydew produced by other insects, oils, and various sweets.

Worker ants locate food by leaving the nest and searching randomly. Once discovered, they return to the colony, marking their path with chemical pheromone trails. Other workers follow these trails to the food source, retrieving and reinforcing the trail on their return. Adult worker ants primarily consume liquids; solid food particles are processed by fourth instar larvae, which convert them into a liquid form for other colony members.

The Fire Ant Sting

When a fire ant stings, it first grasps onto the skin with its mandibles. It then arches its body and injects venom through a stinger located on its abdomen. A single ant can sting multiple times, often pivoting in a circular pattern, leading to several stings in a small area.

The sting immediately causes a sharp, burning pain, followed by intense itching. Within an hour, red bumps with a raised white center typically appear. These often develop into characteristic sterile pustules, which are small blisters filled with yellow fluid, usually within 24 hours. The pustules result from the venom’s alkaloid components and can remain for about a week. Swelling around the sting site can also increase for up to 24 hours.

Ecological Role and Impact

Fire ants, especially imported species, often dominate invaded areas due to their aggressive nature and high reproductive capacity. They significantly impact local ecosystems by preying on native insects, including other ant species, and competing for resources. Their predatory behavior extends to ground-nesting birds, nestlings, and small mammals, affecting wildlife populations and food chains.

Beyond their direct impact on wildlife, fire ants also affect agriculture and infrastructure. In agricultural settings, their hardened mounds interfere with farm machinery during cultivation and harvesting. They damage crops by feeding on seeds and seedlings, reducing yields. Fire ants are also attracted to electrical equipment, where they may chew insulation, build nests, and introduce soil, leading to short circuits and equipment failures.
