Elephants use their trunks to gather food, plucking leaves, pulling up grass, and stripping bark. Their molars grind the fibrous plant material. Tusks also play a role, used for digging for roots or debarking trees. While not food, water is equally vital; elephants drink large quantities daily, typically between 50 to 200 liters (13-55 gallons), often siphoning it with their trunks and then pouring it into their mouths.

Dietary Differences Across Elephant Species and Habitats

While all elephants are herbivores, their specific diets vary based on their species and the environments they inhabit. In contrast, African forest elephants, living in denser woodlands, primarily browse on leaves, fruits, and bark. These differences are largely driven by the types of vegetation available in their respective habitats.
