Dolphins are highly intelligent marine mammals and apex predators. Their carnivorous diet is fundamental to their biology, reflecting their adaptability and shaping their social behaviors. Their feeding habits reveal complex strategies and a reliance on specific prey, dictated by their environment and the availability of local resources.

The Primary Prey Fish and Cephalopods

The foundation of a wild dolphin’s diet is composed of two major categories: fish and cephalopods. Fish are the most frequently consumed prey, with dolphins targeting schooling species such as herring, mackerel, and cod, depending on their geographic location. They are opportunistic feeders, also pursuing bottom-dwelling fish like mullet and flounder when foraging in coastal areas.

Cephalopods, including squid and octopus, are the second major food source, especially for dolphins in deep-water or offshore environments. Dolphins possess conical, peg-like teeth suited for grasping and securing slippery prey rather than for chewing. They swallow their catches whole, utilizing a multi-chambered stomach for digestion.

Some dolphin populations also consume smaller invertebrates, such as crustaceans like shrimp and crab, which are secondary food sources for coastal or river species. An average-sized dolphin consumes a significant amount of food daily, generally requiring about 4% to 6% of its total body weight to sustain its high metabolic rate.

Specialized Hunting Techniques

The intelligence of dolphins is evident in the complex and cooperative methods they employ to secure prey. One widespread technique is herding, where a group works in unison to encircle a large school of fish. This coordinated effort compresses the fish into a dense “bait ball,” allowing the dolphins to take turns charging through the center for an efficient meal.

In shallow, murky waters, some bottlenose and Guiana dolphins use mud-ring feeding. A dolphin swims in a tight circle near the seabed, moving its tail to create a circular plume of mud and sediment. This opaque barrier confuses the trapped fish, often causing them to leap out of the water directly into the waiting mouths of other dolphins.

Another specialized, learned behavior is intentional beaching or strand feeding, practiced by certain groups along the southeastern United States. A coordinated group chases fish toward a sloped shore or mudflat, surging onto the bank to seize prey before rapidly sliding back into the water. Furthermore, dolphins rely on echolocation, a biological sonar system, to locate and sometimes momentarily stun hidden or fast-moving prey by emitting high-frequency clicks.

How Diet Varies by Species and Habitat

A dolphin’s diet varies significantly based on its species, geographic location, and habitat characteristics. Oceanic dolphins, which live far from shore, focus on pelagic species like squid and fast-swimming fish found in deep, open waters. This offshore environment offers different prey than coastal zones, often leading to a diet that includes deep-sea species.

Conversely, coastal dolphin populations typically consume a greater proportion of fish that dwell on or near the seafloor, along with crustaceans and other bottom-dwelling invertebrates. Food availability can also change seasonally, prompting some dolphins, like those in Scotland, to switch from salmon in the summer to herring and mackerel in colder months.

River dolphins, such as the Amazon river dolphin, are adapted to freshwater environments and consume a distinct array of prey, including over 40 species of freshwater fish and various crustaceans. The largest member of the dolphin family, the Orca (killer whale), demonstrates the widest dietary variability, with different populations specializing in either fish or marine mammals like seals and other whales.
