Capybaras, the world’s largest rodents, are semi-aquatic mammals native to South America. As herbivores, their diet is closely tied to their wetland habitats. Understanding what capybaras eat offers insight into their adaptations and their role within their ecosystems.

Natural Diet

In their natural habitats, capybaras primarily graze on grasses and aquatic vegetation. They are selective feeders, often choosing specific types of plants available along riverbanks, swamps, and wetlands. Their diet includes various grasses, sedges, and water hyacinths. An adult capybara can consume 6 to 8 pounds of grass daily. The coarse, fibrous nature of these grasses helps maintain their continuously growing teeth, which are well-suited for grinding tough vegetation.

Seasonal Variations in Food

A capybara’s diet adapts significantly to the changing seasons, particularly between the wet and dry periods. During the wet season, when vegetation is lush and abundant, capybaras are more selective, favoring palatable grasses and aquatic plants. Conversely, the dry season presents challenges as preferred vegetation becomes scarce and less nutritious. In these periods, capybaras broaden their diet to include less palatable plants, reeds, tree bark, and occasionally fruits and seeds. This dietary flexibility allows them to sustain themselves when their primary food sources diminish, demonstrating their adaptability in foraging.

Water plays an important role in a capybara’s diet, extending beyond simple hydration. Their semi-aquatic lifestyle means they frequently forage on submerged or partially submerged aquatic plants. This direct interaction with water sources allows them to access a range of vegetation that might otherwise be unavailable.

Water is also important for aiding the digestion of their fibrous diet, helping to soften plant matter for easier processing. The ability to spend significant time in water assists with thermoregulation, especially in warm climates, which supports their foraging efficiency by preventing overheating during grazing periods.

Capybaras possess a digestive system adapted to extract nutrients from their high-fiber diet. As hindgut fermenters, they rely on microbial fermentation in their large cecum to break down cellulose. This process is similar to that seen in ruminants, allowing them to efficiently process tough plant material.

A key aspect of their digestive strategy is coprophagy, the practice of re-ingesting their own feces, typically the softer, nutrient-rich cecotrophes. This behavior allows them to re-digest partially broken-down food, maximizing the absorption of essential nutrients like B vitamins, vitamin K, and protein. Coprophagy ensures that capybaras gain the highest possible nutritional value from their fibrous diet, making it a survival mechanism.

Captive Diet

In captivity, the diet provided to capybaras aims to replicate their natural intake while ensuring complete nutrition. Hay, such as timothy or orchard grass, forms a staple, providing fiber for dental and digestive health. Commercial rodent or guinea pig chow, often fortified with vitamin C, supplements their diet, as capybaras cannot synthesize this vitamin and are susceptible to scurvy.

Fresh vegetables like leafy greens, carrots, and sweet potatoes are offered, along with occasional fruits as treats. Constant access to fresh water is essential for hydration and digestion.
