Dolphins use their powerful tail flukes to stun fish with a technique known as “fish-whacking” or “fish-kicking,” launching the prey into the air before retrieving it. “Crater feeding” involves diving snout-first into sandy bottoms to unearth hidden fish, leaving visible depressions. Echolocation is an important tool in their hunting arsenal, allowing them to locate prey in dark or murky waters by emitting high-frequency clicks and interpreting the returning echoes. This biological sonar provides information on the prey’s size, shape, distance, and movement, enabling effective pursuit even in challenging underwater environments.

The diet of bottlenose dolphins varies based on geographic location and the age of the individual.
