While genetics provide the blueprint, external conditions profoundly affect a plant’s ability to reach its full height potential. Light availability is a primary factor, as plants exhibit phototropism, bending and growing towards light sources to maximize photosynthesis. Plant growth regulators (PGRs) are chemical compounds applied to plants to influence processes like cell division and elongation. For example, growth retardants can inhibit the synthesis or activity of gibberellins, leading to shorter plants by reducing cell elongation and internode length. Selective breeding programs have also been important in developing crop varieties with desired heights, such as semi-dwarf cereals that are less prone to lodging (falling over). Managing environmental factors like planting density, nutrient levels, and irrigation can also be adjusted to control how tall plants grow.
