The gap between these two is uncertainty, and how you navigate that gap shapes nearly every decision you make, from career moves to medical choices to whether you carry an umbrella. Understanding the difference isn’t just philosophical. It’s a practical skill that changes how you assess risk, plan for the future, and manage worry.

Possibility vs. Probability

At the core of this question is a distinction that logicians, statisticians, and risk analysts all rely on: the difference between what is possible and what is probable. Possibility describes anything that isn’t ruled out. Probability assigns a number to how likely each possibility actually is. A nondeterministic model (one that only tracks possibilities) gives no indication about which outcomes are more likely. It’s missing the concept of likelihood altogether. Probability, on the other hand, attempts to quantify uncertainty so you can calculate which outcomes deserve your attention.

This framework forces you to weigh what could happen by how likely it actually is. A catastrophic outcome with a 1% probability contributes very little to the expected value, even though it looms large in your imagination. A moderate positive outcome with an 80% probability contributes a lot, even though it feels boring. When “Could” Deserves More Attention Than “Will”

Sometimes the low-probability outcome genuinely matters more than the likely one. Insurance exists for this reason. The expected outcome of buying home insurance is that you lose money (most years, nothing happens, and you’ve paid premiums for nothing). But the possible outcome of losing your home without coverage is so devastating that it’s rational to protect against it even though the math says it probably won’t happen.

The general principle: when the consequences of a possible event are severe and irreversible, it makes sense to plan for “could” even if “will” points elsewhere. When the consequences are mild or recoverable, you can safely focus on the most probable outcome and not waste energy on unlikely scenarios. This is why seatbelts are non-negotiable but checking the weather three times before a picnic is probably excessive. The severity of the downside, not just its probability, determines how much weight a possibility deserves.

Separating “what could happen” from “what will happen” isn’t about ignoring risk or pretending uncertainty doesn’t exist. It’s about putting each possible outcome in its proper place, so that the unlikely doesn’t crowd out the probable, and the probable doesn’t blind you to the rare event that could change everything.
