This background coloration acts as the canvas for a dense pattern of darker markings, which can appear as heavy spotting, blotches, or streaks. The resulting mottled shell texture helps them blend into the substrate of their nesting environment, whether it is sand, shingle, or vegetation.
The size of the eggs varies according to the species. Larger gulls, such as the Herring Gull, lay substantial eggs, while smaller species produce correspondingly smaller eggs. However, the characteristic speckled pattern remains consistent across most of the family.
The Biological Purpose of Egg Coloration
The color and pattern of gull eggshells result from two synthesized pigments deposited during egg formation. The reddish-brown colors, which form the spots and speckles, are produced by a pigment called protoporphyrin. Conversely, the blue and green hues of the base color are a result of the pigment biliverdin.
The blending and concentration of these two pigments create cryptic coloration, the primary functional reason for the egg’s appearance. This camouflage is a direct defense mechanism against predators, making the eggs difficult to distinguish from the surrounding ground cover. The irregular distribution of the darker protoporphyrin spots helps to break up the egg’s outline, preventing recognition by foraging animals.
Furthermore, the deposition of protoporphyrin, which is concentrated in the spots, may also serve a structural function. This pigment is thought to increase the shell’s strength in concentrated areas, which is an adaptation to the wear and tear of incubation on the ground. The genetic programming of pigment deposition ensures that each species maintains its signature camouflage pattern.
Nesting and Incubation Habits
Gulls are ground-nesting birds, often choosing a simple scrape in the sand, shingle, or vegetation. In urban environments, they have adapted to nesting on rooftops, which provides a safe, elevated location.
