These chemicals target the insect’s nervous system, specifically interfering with voltage-gated sodium channels in nerve cells. Pyrethroids hold the sodium channels open, causing a massive influx of sodium ions that leads to hyperexcitation and uncontrolled nerve firing. This rapid neurological overload results in paralysis, known as knockdown, and ultimately leads to death. The resulting buildup of acetylcholine at the nerve synapses overstimulates the insect’s muscles and nerves, leading to paralysis and death. While the immediate effect can be slower than pyrethroids, both chemical classes effectively disrupt the insect’s neurological processes.
Choosing the Right Delivery Method

Dusts provide a powerful residual effect, remaining active for an extended period and ensuring that all foraging wasps eventually return to the poisoned nest.
A third option is insecticidal foam, which combines the distance of a spray with the coverage of a dust. The foam expands immediately upon contact, quickly blanketing the nest structure and trapping wasps inside. Foams are useful for treating accessible, visible nests or small openings, as they provide an excellent visual marker for coverage and prevent immediate escape. This expanding barrier ensures the toxic agent fully penetrates the nest material for a thorough kill.

Applying potent insecticides to an aggressive wasp nest requires careful planning to minimize the risk of being stung and ensure product effectiveness. Personal protective equipment (PPE) is necessary, including long sleeves, pants, gloves, and a hat; a full bee suit is the safest choice for large or subterranean nests. Always apply the product with the wind at your back to prevent the toxic spray or dust from blowing onto you.
The most effective time to treat a nest is after sunset or before dawn when the temperature is cooler and nearly all the worker wasps are inside and less active. Targeting the nest during this dormant period ensures the maximum number of insects are exposed to the chemical agent.
