As free chlorine encounters organic contaminants, such as sweat, oils, or microorganisms, it reacts with them. This reaction forms byproducts known as chloramines, or combined chlorine, which have significantly less sanitizing power. Operators must maintain sufficient free chlorine to continuously oxidize these contaminants and maintain a healthy swimming environment.
Some pools and spas use bromine as an alternative sanitizer, which operates similarly to chlorine but is often preferred in warmer water. Bromine reacts with contaminants to form bromamines, which, unlike chloramines, retain a measurable degree of disinfecting capability. The pH level measures the water’s acidity or basicity, and it directly affects the efficiency of the chlorine sanitizer. If the pH is too high, the hypochlorous acid converts into a less potent hypochlorite ion, dramatically reducing its germ-killing power.
The ideal pH range for pool water is slightly basic, maintained between 7.4 and 7.6, which is comfortable for human eyes and skin. To adjust this level, operators use acids, such as muriatic acid or sodium bisulfate, to lower a high pH. Conversely, bases like sodium carbonate, commonly known as soda ash, are added to raise a low pH into the acceptable range.
Total Alkalinity (TA) measures the concentration of alkaline substances, primarily carbonates and bicarbonates, in the water. These compounds act as a buffer, preventing the pH from fluctuating due to factors like rain, swimmer load, or chemical additions. Sodium bicarbonate is commonly used to increase the total alkalinity, maintaining it within an ideal range of 80 to 120 parts per million (ppm).
Calcium hardness refers to the concentration of dissolved calcium in the water. If the level is too low, the water becomes corrosive and may leach minerals from the pool’s plaster or metal equipment. Calcium chloride is added to increase the hardness, protecting the pool structure and preventing surface erosion.

A chemical known as Cyanuric Acid (CYA) is widely used in outdoor pools to shield chlorine from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Without this stabilizer, chlorine can degrade rapidly in sunlight, but CYA binds to the hypochlorous acid to slow this breakdown process. This chemical protection ensures the sanitizer remains active for a longer period, making chlorine usage more efficient.
To combat organic growth that chlorine alone may not address, algaecides are used. These compounds, which can include copper-based formulas or polymer-based polyquats, kill or inhibit the growth of various types of algae. They function as a secondary defense, ensuring the water remains visually clear and free of unwanted growth.
For removing microscopic particles that cause cloudiness, chemicals called flocculants and clarifiers are used. Clarifiers work by chemically binding the tiny suspended particles into slightly larger clusters that the filter can more easily trap and remove. Flocculants achieve a similar goal by aggregating fine debris into large clumps that sink to the bottom of the pool, where they can then be vacuumed out.

A common misconception is that a strong, pungent chemical smell in a pool indicates a high level of chlorine. In reality, the smell is usually caused by chloramines, the combined chlorine byproducts formed when active chlorine reacts with swimmer waste. A noticeable odor signifies that the free chlorine has been depleted and the water quality is low, requiring additional treatment.
The presence of chloramines is the main cause of eye and skin irritation, not the free chlorine itself.
