What Can Chipmunks Eat? A List of Safe & Unsafe Foods

Chipmunks are small, active rodents found across North America and parts of Asia. Recognized for their striped patterns and foraging behaviors, these omnivorous animals consume a diverse array of plant and animal matter. Understanding their natural diet is important for supporting their health and maintaining ecological balance.

Natural Foraging Diet

In their natural habitats, chipmunks primarily consume a varied diet rich in plant materials. They forage extensively for nuts like acorns, hickory nuts, and beechnuts, which they gather and store in burrows for winter. Seeds are a significant portion of their intake, alongside berries and other fruits that provide essential vitamins and moisture during warmer seasons.

Beyond plant matter, chipmunks eat fungi, including mushrooms, and a range of invertebrates. They consume insects like caterpillars, grubs, worms, and snails, which offer valuable protein. Occasionally, they may also eat bird eggs, small birds, or small frogs and other small vertebrates. Chipmunks are known for their ability to stuff large quantities of food into their expandable cheek pouches, allowing them to transport provisions back to their caches.

Safe Foods for Supplementation

For supplemental feeding, certain items can be provided safely and in moderation. Raw, unsalted nuts like peanuts, walnuts, and sunflower seeds offer good fat and protein. Salt is harmful to chipmunks.

Fruits can also be offered as occasional treats, including small pieces of apples, pears, and berries like strawberries and blackberries. These should be given sparingly due to their sugar content. Certain vegetables, such as carrots and small amounts of corn, can also be provided. All supplementary foods should be raw, unseasoned, and free from added ingredients. Fresh water should always be available.

Foods to Avoid

Many human foods are detrimental or toxic to chipmunks and should never be offered. Processed foods, including crisps, bread, cakes, and other sugary snacks, contain high levels of sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats that can lead to obesity and other health issues. Salted nuts are particularly dangerous, as excessive sodium can cause dehydration and kidney problems.

Chocolate contains theobromine, a compound toxic to chipmunks, and can lead to serious health problems even in small quantities. Dairy products are difficult for chipmunks to digest and can cause digestive upset. Avocado contains persin, which can be harmful to chipmunks and should be avoided. Onions and garlic contain compounds that can cause gastrointestinal distress and more severe issues. Any moldy or rotten food should also be avoided, as it can harbor harmful toxins.
