What Bees Don’t Have Stingers and Why They Don’t Need Them

Many people commonly believe all bees possess a stinger and use it defensively. However, this is a misconception, as some bee species do not have stingers. These non-stinging bees have evolved different defense methods or have roles that do not require such an appendage.

The Truth About Stingless Bees

A prominent group of bees without a functional stinger are the “stingless bees,” scientifically classified within the tribe Meliponini. This diverse group encompasses over 600 known species found across tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. These bees are generally small to medium-sized.

Stingless bees are eusocial insects, living in highly organized colonies with distinct castes, including a queen and workers. Their colonies can be perennial, persisting for multiple years. While their stingers are highly reduced and cannot be used for defense, they employ various alternative strategies to protect their nests and resources.

Male Bees Do Not Sting

All male bees, commonly known as drones, are incapable of stinging. The stinger in female bees is a modified ovipositor, an organ primarily used for egg-laying. Since male bees do not lay eggs, they lack this anatomical feature.

Drones develop from unfertilized eggs and are typically larger than worker bees. Their primary function within a colony revolves around reproduction, as they do not collect nectar or pollen, or maintain the hive.

How Non-Stinging Bees Deter Threats

Bees without stingers have developed diverse methods to protect themselves and their colonies. Stingless bees can deliver a painful bite using their strong mandibles. Some species also secrete irritant chemicals or use sticky materials to immobilize intruders.

Stingless bees also employ collective strategies like swarming or mobbing to overwhelm threats. Their nests are often constructed in well-protected locations like hollow tree trunks, rock crevices, or underground cavities, accessible through narrow entrance tubes. Guard bees position themselves at these entrances, attacking non-nestmates by biting and releasing alarm pheromones to recruit more defenders.

Male bees primarily rely on evasion for defense. Some male bees might buzz around intruders to disorient them. Certain species, like the European wool carder bee, have barbed abdomens they use in territorial displays, aggressively chasing away other bees.

The Vital Role of Non-Stinging Bees

Both stingless bees and male bees play significant roles in their respective ecosystems. Stingless bees are crucial pollinators, particularly in tropical and subtropical environments. They pollinate a vast array of wild plant species and numerous economically important crops. Their effectiveness makes them candidates for commercial pollination, even in controlled environments like greenhouses. They also contribute to ecosystem health and biodiversity, producing valuable honey, pollen, and resin.

Male bees, or drones, are indispensable for ensuring the genetic health and continuation of bee colonies. Their primary contribution is to mate with virgin queens, introducing genetic variability. This genetic diversity strengthens the colony’s resilience against diseases and environmental challenges. The presence and reproductive success of drones are vital for maintaining healthy bee populations and supporting ecological balance.
