Odorous House ants (Tapinoma sessile) are also common, measuring approximately 1/16 to 1/8 inch long, with colors ranging from dark brown to black. When crushed, they release a distinctive odor often described as rotten coconut or blue cheese, which aids in their identification. These ants forage in well-defined trails and are attracted to sugary foods.

Argentine ants (Linepithema humile) are another small species, measuring between 2.2 to 2.8 mm long, with a light to dark brown coloration. Unlike Odorous House ants, they do not emit a strong odor when crushed. Argentine ants form massive supercolonies with numerous queens and workers, often displacing native ant species.

Indoors, these ants nest in hidden areas such as wall voids, under floors, behind baseboards, in insulation, or near moisture sources like leaky pipes and heaters. The stability of indoor environments, including consistent temperature and humidity, makes them appealing for colony establishment.

Foraging for food is a highly organized activity for these ants, involving the use of chemical pheromones. When a scout ant locates a food source, it lays down a scent trail, guiding other nestmates to the discovery. This trail-following behavior allows for efficient recruitment of workers to exploit food resources. Tiny ants have diverse diets, with many species preferring sweet substances like honeydew, while others are attracted to greasy foods, proteins, or dead insects. Their foraging success depends on their ability to adapt food preferences and nesting sites to available resources.
