The Calf Stage

Dolphins are born tail-first in the water, an adaptation that minimizes drowning risk. Calves are born able to swim but rely entirely on their mothers for protection and nourishment.

Calves suckle nutrient-rich, fatty milk from their mother’s mammary slits, concealed near her belly. This high-fat milk allows for rapid growth and blubber development, essential for insulation. Calves may nurse for up to two years, though duration varies by species and environmental factors. The mother-calf bond is strong, with the calf often swimming in the mother’s “slipstream” to conserve energy. Female bottlenose dolphins typically mature between 5 and 13 years, while males mature later, usually between 8 and 15 years. Reproduction involves courtship rituals, including playful interactions, acrobatic displays, and vocalizations. Aging and Natural End of Life

These changes can lead to conditions like chronic inflammation, reduced muscle mass, and higher cholesterol levels.

The natural end of a dolphin’s life often results from a combination of factors. With declining physical condition and reduced hunting efficiency, older individuals may struggle to keep up with their pod or effectively forage for food. Increased vulnerability to predators, such as certain shark species, also becomes a factor.
