The indigo plant has served as a source for blue indigo dye for millennia, impacting cultures and economies worldwide. Evidence of its use dates back approximately 6,000 years, with discoveries in ancient Peru, Egypt, Mesopotamia, and the Indus Valley. This dye became a significant commodity, often called “blue gold,” prized for creating durable, colorfast textiles. Its cultural importance extended from Japan, where indigo dyeing (aizome) symbolized protection, to Africa, where textiles denoted prestige and heritage.
Extracting blue pigment from indigo leaves involves several steps. First, harvested leaves are soaked in water to initiate fermentation, converting the colorless compound indican into indoxyl. This fermentation typically turns the water yellowish. The solution is then aerated, often by churning, which oxidizes the indoxyl into the insoluble blue pigment, indigotin.
After oxidation, indigotin precipitates as a blue sludge or paste, which is separated from the liquid, pressed into cakes, and dried. The dried cake is ready for use as a dye. This occurs through a symbiotic relationship with bacteria in its root nodules, enriching soil fertility.
