Water depth varies significantly across dolphin habitats. Many bottlenose dolphins are found in shallow coastal waters less than 200 meters deep, sometimes even less than 3 meters. Some populations can dive to depths of 300 meters, and occasionally 1000 meters, in search of food. Common dolphins, for instance, inhabit open ocean waters ranging from approximately 198 to 1981 meters deep.

Water temperature plays a considerable role in dolphin distribution, with most species preferring tropical and temperate waters. Bottlenose dolphins thrive in water temperatures between 10°C and 32°C (50°F and 90°F). While orcas can be found in colder Arctic and Antarctic waters, most dolphins favor warmer climates for body temperature regulation.

Salinity levels are another important factor. Dolphins generally exist in waters with a salinity range of 20 to 35 parts per thousand (ppt). While they can tolerate lower salinities for short periods, prolonged exposure below 8 to 10 ppt can lead to adverse health effects.

Prey availability is a primary determinant for dolphin habitat selection. Dolphins spend most of their time in areas with abundant food sources like fish, squid, and crustaceans. Common Dolphins

Short-beaked common dolphins favor subtropical to temperate, primarily offshore waters, often found along the continental slope. In contrast, long-beaked common dolphins prefer shallow, warm temperate waters closer to the coast, usually within 50 to 100 nautical miles. Both types are distributed across the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans.

River Dolphins

River dolphins represent a specialized group, living exclusively in freshwater or brackish water systems. Examples include the Amazon, Yangtze, Indus, and Ganges river dolphins, found in specific river basins in South America and Asia. These dolphins are smaller than their oceanic relatives and possess adaptations for navigating warm, shallow, and often turbid river currents.
