Natural gas is considered the cleanest-burning fossil fuel, offering an advantage over coal and oil in terms of emissions. When combusted, it produces lower levels of conventional air pollutants compared to other fossil fuels. This reduces the amount of fuel needed per unit of electricity generated compared to older simple-cycle gas turbines or conventional coal plants. This high conversion rate provides economic savings and conserves resources.

The operational flexibility of natural gas power plants is a benefit for grid management. Natural gas units can ramp up or down their power output quickly, a feature known as fast-acting dispatchability. This makes natural gas an ideal complementary resource for intermittent renewable energy sources like wind and solar power. When renewable generation drops unexpectedly, natural gas plants can rapidly fill the supply gap, maintaining grid stability.
