What Are Male Honeybees Called & What Is Their Role?

Honeybees live in highly organized colonies, with each member contributing to the collective survival and prosperity of the hive. This intricate social structure involves different types of bees, each with specialized roles. Understanding these roles helps to appreciate the complex dynamics that allow a honeybee colony to thrive.

The Male Honeybee: The Drone

Male honeybees are known as drones. They are distinct from female worker bees and the queen in several physical characteristics. Drones generally have a larger, stouter body compared to worker bees, though smaller than the queen. Their most noticeable feature is their large eyes, significantly bigger than those of worker bees or queens, nearly meeting at the top of their heads.

Drones also possess large wings that cover their entire abdomen. Unlike female bees, drones do not have a stinger, making them unable to defend themselves or the hive. Drones are docile and non-aggressive. Their fuzzy, rounded abdomens further distinguish them.

The Drone’s Role in the Colony

The primary purpose of drones within a honeybee colony is reproduction. Their essential role is to mate with a virgin queen from another hive. Drones do not participate in typical hive activities like foraging for nectar or pollen, nor do they produce honey or beeswax.

Drones are dependent on worker bees for food and care. While young drones may feed themselves, older drones often rely on nurse bees for sustenance. Their main activity involves flying out of the hive to gather in specific locations called drone congregation areas (DCAs), where they await virgin queens for mating flights.

From Egg to End: The Drone’s Journey

The life of a drone begins from an unfertilized egg laid by the queen. This process, known as parthenogenesis, means drones are haploid, possessing only one set of chromosomes from their mother. The queen lays these unfertilized eggs in larger cells specifically constructed by worker bees for drone development.

Development from egg to adult drone takes approximately 24 days. After three days as an egg, it hatches into a larva, which is then fed by worker bees. The drone larva consumes more food than a worker bee larva due to its larger size. Around day 10, the cell is capped, and the larva transforms into a pupa, continuing its development inside.

Upon reaching sexual maturity, typically around 12 to 16 days after emerging, drones embark on mating flights, with a relatively short lifespan averaging about 55 to 90 days. If a drone successfully mates with a queen, the act is fatal; his reproductive organs are torn from his body, leading to his immediate death. Drones that do not mate face a different fate. As resources become scarce in late summer or autumn, worker bees stop feeding them and expel them from the hive. Unable to feed themselves or survive the cold, these drones perish, ensuring the hive conserves resources for the winter.
